Woodstock, Illinois, rests about fifty miles northwest of Chicago. With about 25,000 people, the town is the county seat of McHenry County. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Woodstock as one of the country’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations in 2007.  The city dates back to 1873 and originally, its growth was centered around the train line, which encouraged an industrial presence in the town’s development. In the early 1900’s, Woodstock became known as “Typewriter City”, since over half the world’s typewriters were produced there by 1922. In more recent times, most of the filming for the 1993 movie Groundhog Day happened in Woodstock.

Shopping and Dining

The Arboretum is a popular outdoor mall that includes furniture and clothing stores, restaurants and a movie theater. For individual stores, residents enjoy perusing the local bookstore, Read Between the Lynes. Besides selling books, the shop hosts several book clubs and numerous book related community events. At Seasons by Peg, customers can find specialty gifts, coffee, chocolate, candy and home décor. At Studio 2015, patrons will discover custom jewelry, engagement rings and other pieces.

Woodstock offers a wide variety of local restaurants. Mixteca Mexican Grill and Tequila Bar is a popular destination for Mexican food. Golden Rolls Sushi Bar and Grill offers a wide array of sushi items as well as entrees and lunchtime Bento Boxes. At La Petite Creperie and Bistrot, diners find French food including sweet and savory crepes for any time of day. They also offer a Sunday Brunch menu. Locals looking for American food and live music enjoy D.C. Cobb’s tavern and eatery. Their straightforward specialties are burgers and beer.

Parks and Recreation

Woodstock Recreation Center, a membership fee based facility, which includes group fitness classes, racquetball and a supervised playroom. There is also an indoor swimming pool and a full-size gym with an indoor track. Woodstock Water Works family aquatics center has several pools to satisfy babies, young children or lap swimmers. The local recreation department offers a variety of community events including sports, fitness, senior activities, aquatics, dance and arts events. Woodstock also offers special summer recreation programs, local running races and sports fields to enjoy.

About an hour and fifteen minutes away, visitors can explore Illinois Beach State Park. This park has sand dunes, marshes and forests, camping and other outdoor recreation activities, including a marina.

Woodstock median household income is very nearly the same as the state average, both about $54,000, yet at $193,000, the median real estate value is slightly less than the state average of $202,000.

Historic Woodstock Square provides a cultural center to the town with the Woodstock Opera House, the Old Courthouse Arts Center, specialty shops and popular restaurants. It also provides the venue for numerous special events during the year. The Woodstock Farmers Market, located in the Square, received the designation in 2012 as the top rated farmers market in Illinois. The Market offers producers a center to market their crops directly to consumers, allowing growers to continue their operations. Customers can enjoy the in-season, locally grown produce, as well as other products like meat, cheese, wines and honey.

Schools, Health and Transportation

McHenry Community College is located in Crystal Lake.

Centegra Health System. This healthcare system has a number of locations throughout the county and provides a range of medical specialties. Additional medical care and specialty treatment may be found nearby in Chicago.

Woodstock’s railroad station is on a line originating from Chicago. U.S. Route 14, along with state routes 47 and 120, provide the main highway access for the town. I-90 is nearly a half-hour drive away. The closest airport is Hunter Airport while the nearest major airport is Chicago O’Hare International.
